Introduction

“The Union List of Current Periodicals in University, Postgraduate Institute and Graduate Institute Libraries in Sri Lanka” was published in 2002 under the professional leadership of Mr. N.T.S.A. Senadeera. After a lapse of nearly 3 years we brought you “Guide to Current Periodical Resources in Academic Institutions of Sri Lanka: A Union List 2006”.

“Guide to Current Periodical Resources in Academic Institutions of Sri Lanka: A Union List 2008” is the update of its 2006 predecessor. This publication is not only to continue the great tradition of compilation of resource tools by the University of Peradeniya but also to add features, which would make resource-access much easier and faster.

Objectives of the Guide

To compile a comprehensive list of academic and scholarly periodicals to assist teaching and research activities.
To develop awareness among the academics and researchers on the variety of current periodicals available in the Sri Lanka University Library Network and encourage maximum usage.
To promote resource-sharing activities among the University Library Network.

Scope of the Guide

Periodical holdings of following 14 Universities, 4 Postgraduate Institutes and 3 Graduate Institutes are included in the Guide reporting on 1813 Periodical titles.

We regret to note that we were unable to obtain any response from the Buddhist Pali University, Buddhasravaka Bhikshu University and National Institute of Library and Information Sciences.

The Guide is arranged into two main sections:

Section I : Periodical titles recorded according to alphabetical order.

Section II : Institutes recorded according to alphabetical order and their respective periodical holdings.

The Section II is a new feature, which we have introduced to make access easier through the respective institute. In both Sections the records are arranged as follows:

Epilogue

Contemporary Librarians boldly face many challenges including economic stresses caused by decreased funding and increased costs, changes in the composition and information – seeking behaviour of the user universe and the effects of constant evolving technologies. We hope this Guide will assist in access and release some of the tensions the Librarians experience.
