The library of Peradeniya University originated in 1921 as the library of the Ceylon University College. The Library was shifted to Peradeniya in 1952 and was moved to the present premises in 1960. After moving to Peradeniya, the library developed into a library network comprising the Main Library and seven other branch libraries, namely Agriculture, Science, Medical, Engineering, Vet Medical, Allied Health Science and Dental libraries. The ninth library is attached to the sub-campus, Faculty of Agriculture in Mahailuppallama. The branch libraries are located in their respective faculties. The Main Library can be accessed by proceeding along the new Galaha road, passing the entrance to the Arts Theatre and turning right to the Senate building.
Peradeniya University Library Network is considered as the oldest and the largest University library in Sri Lanka.
This Festschrift was presented in parallel to the commencement of Centenary Celebration of University of Peradeniya Library on 08.04.2021 in recognition of contributions made to the Field of Library and Information Science and Librarianship by Mr. NTSA Senadeera, the 5th Librarian of University of Peradeniya (1982-2002). This double blind peer reviewed volume is of two parts; Reminiscences on Mr. Senadeera and Essays written by his colleagues, contemporary academics, students and professionals in the Library and Information Science Field both from local and international arenas. The articles touch various ranges of Library and Information Science scholarship. Presentation of this Felicitation volume gives the Library community the opportunity to show their deep gratitude and respect towards Mr. Senadeera.
The Library collection of the University of Peradeniya celebrated hundred years of existence on the 8th of April 1921. The Ceylon University College Library entered its very first book on the accession registry on the 8th of April 1921. Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam donated the first set of books to the Ceylon University College Library which was functioning in a house called “Vila Venezia” in Colombo. The donation was the personal library collection of late Mr. Arunachalam Padmanabha, son of Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam which comprised 1426 volumes.
The digital information provision of the Library of the University of Peradeniya took a new turn with the launching of the British Council Sponsored Digital wall. The digital library walls are illustrated wallpapers with active QR codes that link a phone or tablet to a variety of UK content including e-books, Learning apps, Podcasts, reports, and IELTS-related material. Digital Library walls are a bridge to the British Council’s Digital Library offer. The QR-coded content can be downloaded free of charge using Android or iOS QR scanning apps. Digital Library walls present a new way of accessing the library collection by facilitating the ability to download the content onto a device that can be read on the go. In parallel to the Centenary Anniversary of the Library Collection, University of Peradeniya, the inaugural issue of the Library Newsletter was officially launched by Prof. Parakrama Karunarathne, Acting Vice-Chancellor on 8th April 2021. Mr. R. Maheswaran is the Editor-in- Cheif and Ms. W.H.D.K. Abeyrathne & Ms. S. Weerasinghe are the Co-editors of this Newsletter. The layout was designed by Mr. Ishan Senevirathne and Mr. Rivikantha Herath. The Librarian of the University of Peradeniya, R. Maheswaran conducted an orientation program for the new entrants of the Management Faculty via Zoom on Tuesday, 6th April 2021. Senior Lecturer Ms. Anoma Kolongahapitiya coordinated the event.
The University of Ceylon and its library started in 1921 in Colombo. Since then over 100 years, this knowledge base has expanded astronomically. Today the University of Peradeniya claims the ownership of this invaluable asset. In 2021, this book repository fulfills its 100 years of service. It has assisted thousands of alumina spread all over the world.
Therefore, to commemorate this significant event, the University of Peradeniya library is planning to publish a Centenary Volume. The theme of the publication is " More Open than usual - The Unparalleled Repository of Knowledge at the Centre of Excellence in University Education: The Past, the Present, and the Future”.
We would like to invite you all as esteemed research scholars of the country to contribute to this volume by sending your scholarly works such as research articles, descriptive articles, literature reviews, dialogues, and discussion papers.

According to a request made by the Librarian, a conservationist attached to the Department of National Archives visited the Main Library of the University of Peradeniya. The main purpose of his visit was to examine the physical condition of the palm manuscript collection available in the Library and to inspect the ongoing palm-leaf manuscript preservation process. The officer was highly satisfied with the prevailing physical condition of the materials and the preservation and conservation measures that had been taken by the Library.Photos »
The Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy, His Excellency Raakesh Natraj paid a visit to the Main Library of the University of Peradeniya on Friday, 12th March 2021. The Librarian of the University of Peradeniya, R. Maheswaran warmly welcomed him and took him in a guided tour of the Library. The Assistant High commissioner made a valuable donation of Sanskrit books to be added in the Library collection for the benefit of students and academic staff members who are interested in Sanskrit language and Literature. The Librarian presented the Assistant High Commissioner with a Jade plant as a souvenir to signify the Centennial Celebrations of the Library of the University of Peradeniya. Future, support for the library and collaborations were also discussed during the meeting.
The University of Peradeniya Library has now established a Centralized document delivery service through e mail, aiming to fulfill the Literature needs of our academics, students and researchers.

The ceremonial opening of the above unit was held 15th May 2018 under the patronage of Prof. Upl B. Dissanayake the Vice-Chancellor, University of Peradeniya.
The ancient and rare palm-leaf manuscripts are a precious treasure for the Library which possesses the literary evidence of the society to trace the cultural legacy of Sri Lanka. Comparing with the palm-leaf collections available in the country, University of Peradeniya holds the 2nd largest collection and it is the largest collection in a university library.
The collection is nearly about 5000 items which is about 250,000 individual leaves (pages). Steps have been taken by the Acting Librarian Mr. R. Maheswaran to preserve and maintain this cultural heritage in to a proper condition through establishing the “ palm-leaf manuscript preservation and conservation unit” in the library.
The University of Peradeniya Library Network community condoles the sad demise of eminent legal luminary Justice C. G. Weeramantry, former Judge of the Supreme Court and International Court of Justice.
Justice C. G. Weeramantry will be gratefully remembered forever by us for the valuable contribution he made for the enrichment of the law collection of this Library.
His name will go down in the annals of the Main Library, University of Peradeniya for the generous donation.

During sabbatical leave in August - November 2015, Sriyani Perera, Senior Assistant Librarian / Medical served as a Visiting Librarian in a few university Libraries in the USA. In the Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) of the School of Medicine of University of Pittsburgh, USA, she met with the library’s leadership team, digital library services, and reference librarians and had a tour of the Medical School Hospital. Discussions with librarians in digital library services focused on HSLS’s digital infrastructure, including e-resource acquisitions, information access points, metadata, desktop and mobile computing, multimodal technology support, document delivery services, and technology education. HSLS liaison librarians shared their experiences supporting students and faculty. She attended in-person Flash-Classes on Information Literacy Skills, Molecular Biology Information services, workshop restructuring and Mendeley Basics, sat with resource persons in Webinar: “What is the Value of Training? Exploring Return on Investment (ROI) for Library Instruction” and Webinar: “Getting Systematic in Systematic Reviews” and participated in a Painless PubMed Workshop. Mrs Perera also visited with the Executive Director and Coordinators of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region, who discussed their role in improving the public’s access to health information.
Highlight of her visit were her presentation to HSLS staff about Sri Lanka, the University of Peredeniya, and the University’s libraries, her participation in a three day Workshop on “Systematic Reviews: nuts and bolts for librarians” conducted by the Medical Library Association of USA and her participation in the Annual Research Conference of Pennsylvania, USA the “Science 2015 – One Health” held in Pittsburgh. She visited libraries of Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University, Pittsburgh USA and spent time in getting herself familiarized with various services/aspects of their library system.
Proposed building plan and architectural drawings of the New Library building were officially handed over to the Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya Prof. Upul Dissanayake by the council member and Architect of the building project Mr. Gamini Dissanayake. Prof. Milton Rajratne, Dean of the Faculty of Management, University of Peradeniya, The Head of the Engineering Design Center(ECD) of University of Peradeniya, Chief Works Engineer of the University were also present for this occasion which was held at the Vice Chancellors office. Mheswaran, the Acting Librarian of University of Peradeniya along with Senior Assistant Librarians Mrs. Rita Liyanage and Mrs. Charmani Gunasekara participated in this occasion on behalf of the Library Network of University of Peradeniya. Mrs. B.M.M.C.B. Hindagolla resumed duties on 30th March 2015 after obtaining PhD from Niigata University Japan. Dr. Hindagolla conducted her research on “Improvement of e-based resources Utilization in University libraries in Sri Lanka: User investigation and application of integrated model of Technology Acceptance Model and Flow Theory”. We express our sincere congratulation to Dr. Hindagolla on her success.
Dr. P Wijetunge the Librarian of University of Peradeniya resigned from 16th of February 2015 to assume duties as the Librarian of University of Colombo. Dr. Wijetunge held the post of Librarian at University of Peradeniya from January 2011 to April 2015. During her tenure at Peradeniya she provided the leadership to barcode all the Library books in the Main Library, to start the digital library, to introduce the new library management system Koha, to develop the library website and also to inculcate the research culture in the library. She formed the National Digital Library Consortium under UGC to provide access to electronic journals to all fifteen universities in Sri Lanka. She is also the country co-ordinator to International Network for the Availability of Publications (INASP) and President elect of Sri Lanka Library Association. We wish Dr. Wijetunge all success in her future endeavors.
Ms. Sriyani Ileperuma resumed duties as the Senior Assistant Librarian, Science Library from 25th of February 2015 after completing her sabbatical leave.
Subcommittee for Library and E-learning of the Faculty of Dental Sciences organized the “ User Awareness Seminar on Resources and Retrieval of Health Information for the 2nd year BDS students”, Faculty of Dental Sciences on 11th February 2014 at the IT Center, University of Peradeniya . It was sponsored by HELLIS – (Health Literature and Library Information Service Network ,WHO). It was hands on training and covered the following subject areas.

Sri Lanka consortium of electronic journal databases was set up by the University Grants Commission and access has been provided to Elsevier (Engineering) and Emerald databases. Ms. Sureni Weerasinghe was appointed to the post of Assistant Librarian in the Library Network of University of Peradeniya. She obtained her first degree, B. Sc (first class honors) in Mathematics from the same university. She received the university award for academic excellence in the year 2008/2009. She has served as a Temporary Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics before joining the Library Network.

The Library Network of the University of Peradeniya in collaboration with the International Research Center (INRC) successfully completed a Workshop on Bibliometric & Scientometric Analysis for Research Management for university academics, librarians, information specialists from 01 to 03 August 2016 at the IDAS Computer Laboratory,
NAT Building, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya.
The Resource person was Prof. R. Balasubramani, Assistant Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, Bharathidasan University, India. Prof: C. Murugan, Head, Department of Library and Information Science, Periyar University India also participated.
The workshop was informative and very useful to researchers and covered the following areas the during sessions such as Bibliometrics / Scientometrics and its role to motivate staff to publish their research papers, understanding citation analysis, use of citation databases, finding of Impact Factor Journals, H index and G Index and the issues related to plagiarism.
Total of 37 academic staff members participated at the workshop. Dr. N. Gunawrdhana, Director InRc and Mr. R. Maheshwaran, Acting Librarian also participated in this event.

The University Librarians’ Association of Sri Lanka (ULA) arranged a “Workshop on Communication Skills and Professional Ethics for Library Information Assistants” on 25th, February 2016 at the Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (PGIHSS), University of Peradeniya. The following delegates participated in the inauguration session of this series of workshops. 57 Library Information Assistants participated from island wide University libraries.

The book titled, “Compendium of Postgraduate Research” compiled by Ms. Sriyani Ileperuma, Deputy Librarian of the University of Peradeniya and published by the National Library and Documentation Services Board of Sri Lanka was launched at the National Library auditorium on March 27, 2015.
This publication consists of bibliographic details pertaining to 1390 Ph.D., M.Phil. and M.Sc. theses presented under the ten Boards of Study (i.e. Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Plant Sciences, Physics, Science Education, Statistics & Computer Science and Zoological Sciences) in the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS), University of Peradeniya, from its inception in 1996 to the end of 2013. Author abstracts of Ph.D. and M.Phil. theses are included along with the basic details of M.Sc. theses. This compendium is complete with title, author and supervisor indices.
This publication will serve as a sourcebook of research carried out on nationally relevant problems for organizations such as universities, research institutions, government institutions and even private sector organizations. Photos »
Parallel to the 60th anniversary of the University of Peradeniya, Main Library organized a two day exhibition showcasing some of its treasured possessions. Among these exhibits, were the historical documents, rare and old palm leaf manuscripts, rare Tamil publications, items used in the library in the old days etc. The Emeritus Prof. Ediriweera Sarachchandra Collection opened in the Main Library in May 2014 was also opened for public viewing during this two-day period.
To coincide with the exhibition, Mr. Buddhika Konara, an MPhil student of the Department of Sinhala conducted a highly informative and enlightening lecture on “Historical documents found in the Main Library” at the library premises. click link below for photos. Photos »
Display of books authored by Prof. D. J. Kalupahana is taking place at the Main Library of University of Peradeniya until 21st of February 2014.
Prof. D. J. Kalupahana, a brilliant student of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies passed away in Hawaii recently. He was the Emeritus Professor of Philosophy in University of Hawaii. Prof. Kalupahana served at the Department if Pali and Buddhist after his graduation in 1959 and served nearly a dacade before joining University of Hawaii.
University of Peradeniya awarded him the honorary Doctor of Literature Degree in 1998. He established a scholarship in his name for students specializing in Buddhist Studies BA degree programme and donated his personal library collection of books to the Peradeniya University library.
At the ceremonial opening of his collection on the 25th of October 2001 he said “ I had a free education all the way up to the Ph.D. Degree and the University of Ceylon was the institution that helped me to be whatever I am today. As such I had a deep obligation to this institution. I felt that by donating the books, many of which were found to be not in the Main Library, I was fulfilling this obligation. ” More »
The Annual General Meeting of the University Librarians Association (ULA) of Sri Lanka was held on the 07th February 2014 at 10.30 a.m. at the Postgraduate Unit, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya.
Prof. Atula Senaratne, Vice Chancellor and Prof. Shantha K. Hennayake, Deputy Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour respectively. Dr. P. Wijetunga, Librarian of University of Peradeniya delivered the welcome address. The biannual journal of the University Librarians Association was offered to the head table by the Editor Mr. Ajantha Dharmarathne, Senior Assistant Librarian of the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science Library. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Sunil Premarathne, Secretary of ULA and the Senior Assistant Librarian of the Faculty of Dental Sciences. More »

Weeramantry, former Vice-President of the International Court of Justice ceremonially handed over his personal collection to the library of the University of Peradeniya on the 15th of July 2013.
